16V: Chiptuning

Bericht door MX-3-Tom »

Hi guys,

I'm MX-3-Tom from the german MX-3-Community.
I was also in Köthen, maybe you remember me.

I've got an 1997 MX-3 1.6 16V DOHC with 107HP.

I think of chiptuning for my engine.
There is an company which tunes it up to 120HP. It will cost 449 EUR.

What do you think of it?
Did anybody of you made some experiences with chiptuning?

Thanks for helping!
Greetings!
Tom

hello tom..

at first welcome to the forums..

about your question, normally with chiptuning a N/a ( non blown by turbo/compressor) engine it will not make that much of a difference..

i think 450 euro's is al lot of money for a small amount of power you will get in return..

ofcourse its your money, but i'd save my money and spend it on something else usefull..

the 1.6 engine of the mx3 is a nice engine, but when it comes to ''tuning'' the engine its a pain in the ass, because without serious tuning like a turbo you still wont make it into a streetrace car..

i don't know how you guys in germany think about placing the BPT engine from the 323 into the mx.. thats a good alternative for getting some nice power to the 4cil mx3..

ok, it will take a lot more money, buts its more bang for your bucks...

Thanks for your answer. :)

Generally I think the 16V ist ist great engine. In Köthen I saw that my engine is not much slower than a V6 1.9.
But next year I want to install 18''-wheels.
Then I think 107HP are to little.
So I want to have ~15HP more to keep the engine performance.

Are there any modifications for my 16V DOHC else where you made experiances with?

EDIT:
A BPT-engine is very diffucult to buy and the swap is a litte bit expensive. ,)
I only want to keep my performance after changing my wheels from 16'' to 18''. :)

well, not to break your luck, but then i think it was a crappy driver, because in the books the 1.6 does 10.5sec to the 100, and the v6 8,5 sec...

But next year I want to install 18''-wheels.

huh? well bigger wheels normally doesnt cost you performance... ok, a 18'' wheel is slightly heavier then a stock 15'' but you will not feel that when you have bigger rims..

who told you that bigger rims will cost you performance then??? would be funny, lets say i place 2 12'' subwoofers incl a box... does that then cost me a lot of performance?

very funny guy who ever made you believe that ;)

EDIT:

so the conclusion is, if you want more performance because you are getting bigger wheels, keep the money in your pocket, because it will not really influence your performance

In the german forum they say that bigger wheels cost performance.
Because bigger rims are heavier and have a bigger torque of inertia.

And some members can approve that bigger rims can cost percormance.

I agree that the weight in wheels makes much more difference then weight in for example subwoofers. The difference betwee sprung and unsprung weight.

ok, maybe a bad example with the subwoofers then... i know there are lightweight rims in the market, but on a ''normal'' streetcar i think these make no sense

and what are we talking about? tenths of a seconde maybe...

well, i don't think that you would really ''feel'' the difference when you take of in a drag 1on1..

i think it's all about the ''feeling'' then... just like people think their car pulls much faster when they put on a openair filter... its the sound that makes you ''think'' you pull up faster, it's all between the ears...

EDIT;

ok, so it makes difference... but then again, do you want to spend 450 euros just to make up that small amount of power loss

Ok, I think the answer is clear. Just for future reference:

I don't think so.

Had anybody of you here made some experiences with chiptuning a 16V DOHC?
